Lawngtlai is one of the eight administrative districts of Mizoram with its headquarters at Lawngtlai town. The Districts shares common boundaries with Lunglei and Saiha District in the north and south respectively. It is located in the southern most part of Mizoram having common international borders with Bangladesh in the west and Myanmar in the east. There are two Autonomous District Councils within the District namely the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) and the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) with their headquarters at Lawngtlai and Kamalanagar respectively. There are 3 Legislative Assembly constituencies in this district, 36-Tuichawng (ST), 37-Lawngtlai West (ST) and 38-Lawngtlai East (ST).
